“Stop trying so hard to sound deep. Stop using twice the words necessary. Your thoughts have potential, but your writing is muddy and imprecise.

Also, when was the last time you traveled with just a backpack? That detail is jarring like dad’s voice on the answering machine interrupting some…

Dear John Mayer,

Although I did enjoy your post on travels, it is so hard for me to believe YOU living out of a backpack is anything like ME living out of a backpack, or most other common people I know. For one, I do not own an iPhone, or any Apple products for that matter. I also do not own designer luggage. I also have to fly coach or ride the shady Greyhound, and we all know one barely gives peanuts while the other you’re lucky if its not full of actual nuts. Then after travel, I am lucky if I can stay in a hotel, let alone even a hostel. Shared bathrooms are probably not appealing for a rock star like you. So is your traveling life real life? Yes, to some. But not to me. A girl could dream about living in your “vagabond” conditions but it is rare that a girl can live them out. I am not a musician, nor do I even claim to be a writer, and my life has not been forever changed by being in the right place at the right time. Therefore, it is few and far between that I can pack up and leave in an instant, although my entire life has been based upon having the time and means to do so.

When was the last time you had to scrape for money? When you had to ask a friend to buy you a drink after a rough day because you can’t afford to buy a round yourself? When was the last time you wrote things and people barely paid attention to you and your words? How many shows did you play to an audience of five people, pouring out your heart and soul into amplified sound only to have nobody talk to you after the show? I’m interested in these things, because we all know it is about the journey, right? And I know you have been through this. Most, if not all, musicians have.

I only read your blog because I think your writing is better than your music. More honest, more appealing. My Manfriend is “falling in love with you” because of your tumblr, when he barely says a thing about mine. Guess I should start taking your approach. I enjoy the comedy in all things, and I appreciate your inquisitive manner of writing upon subjects that we all think about but don’t think quick enough to blog about.

Maybe one of these days you’ll stop singing whiny songs about boning Jennifer Love Hewitt and play some rock and roll that a girl like me could get into. You could probably write a song about reblogging soup and I am more apt to become a fan. If you want some inspiration, I could give you a list of albums. You’re very talented, I just think lyrically you try too hard. But hell, everyone’s a critic.

You answer my questions, I’ll start writing some real shit.

Love, Kymm
